How Lack of Mental Growth Leads to Depression

‘Not growing your brain is making you depressed’. People do everything, from focusing on physical health, career growth and maintaining relationships, but we sometimes forget the significance of mental growth. Just like we force our muscles to tear and recover and get back stronger, the brain need that stimulation too. Our brain needs challenges to grow and stay healthy. But when we stop using it the way it wants, various things comes in our life and some of them are boredom, stagnation and depression. The boredom which leads to overdose of social media. Since we are not pushing our brain to such extent that it can learn something and later this becomes the reason for brain rot(We’ve all experienced moments where our minds feel sluggish, unfocused, or just plain “off.” In today’s digital age, this mental decline has earned the nickname brain rot.) There’s a process in our brain called neurogenesis which is the process that our brain is producing new neurons(simply means that our brain is growing). Some researches have shown that the lack of neurons leads to depression. And some researches have shown that:

With 4 Habits:

“Compared with the unfavorable lifestyle, favorable lifestyle was associated with 57 percent lower risk of depression…”

Today’s youth, including myself, are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress and mental health challenges. Research indicates that chronic stress can inhibit neurogenesis, or brain growth. We are constantly exposed to others’ successes, which our brains struggle to process, often leading us to feel as though we’ve reached our life’s purpose by the end of our education. This external pressure can become so overwhelming that it hinders our brain’s development and pushes us into a state of depression.

How to Stimulate Your Brain and Boost Your Mood?

Embrace Continuous Growth

Commit to discovering something new each day—be it through reading, enrolling in a course, or acquiring a new skill. This daily pursuit of knowledge not only keeps your mind active but also wards off complacency.

Solve Problems and Puzzles

Engaging in activities such as solving puzzles, tackling brainteasers, or picking up a new language exercises your brain in diverse ways. These mental challenges foster the creation of new neural pathways, boosting cognitive abilities and strengthening emotional resilience.

Stay Physically Active

Physical exercise benefits not only your body but also your brain. It enhances blood circulation to the brain, which supports better memory, concentration, and overall cognitive performance.

Unlocking Your Creative Potential

Set aside time for creative endeavors like drawing, writing, or making music. These artistic activities not only invigorate your brain but also provide an outlet for emotional expression, which can help alleviate frustration and depression.
